Nanotechnology, commonly defined as the manipulation of matter on an atomic, molecular, and supramolecular scale, and more precisely the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometres, is not a separate scientific discipline, but rather an aggregate of several disciplines focussed on the study of matter on a small scale.

Nanotechnology does however bring the more traditional focusses of physics, chemistry, biology and engineering together in a very fluid and interdisciplinary way.

The applications of nano-technology are very diverse and include medicine (ultrahigh surface areas for rapid effect) energy and manufacturing (new nanostructured materials with designed electronic and optoelectronic properties) green technology (ultra-efficient nanostructured catalyst materials), filtration (nanoporous filtration material) and so on.
